In most of my "futbol" career, I was the designated last man for defense. The sweeper, preventing the opposing team from scoring against us. It was a simple game. Either you stop the opponent on the defensive end or score a goal on the offensive end.
Speed, ball control and other skills helps to win the game. But in a situation wherein both teams have both qualities, how can you prevent from ending the game into a tie? And then the game was reinvented. I only realized it when I was able to score a goal as part of defensive end for my team.
Before, players are inactive due to the position that were given to them. Then the game evolved from being stagnant to a dynamic one. It was not about "just" playing your position, but about extending it to create an advantage... making yourself available in situations there is a stale-mate.
Scoring a point makes you ahead of your opponent. Offense is still the best defense. But would I still be a defensive player when I was able to score and contribute for our team to win?
